Sin Makes You Stupid: American Gulag Edition

Louisiana Upholds Life Sentence to Black Man For Stealing Hedge Trimmers in 1997

Meet Fair Wayne Bryant, convicted in 1997 of stealing a pair of hedge clippers. Prosecutors pursued and won a life sentence in the case, a penalty permissible under the state’s habitual offender law. Bryant appealed the life sentence as too severe.

Recently he appealed his conviction. Nope, said the state of Louisiana, it is right and good and true that we continue to rob you of your freedom forever and ever, because of those hedge clippers.

“Yay!” say the Good White Christian MAGA cult. “The law is the law! Three strikes and you are out! Law and order!” And so this pack of soulless Javerts is avenged on this man and gets their stupid spite.

Meanwhile:

Since his conviction in 1997, Mr. Bryant’s incarceration has cost Louisiana taxpayers approximately $518,667,” she wrote. “Arrested at 38, Mr. Bryant has already spent nearly 23 years in prison and is now over 60 years old. If he lives another 20 years, Louisiana taxpayers will have paid almost one million dollars to punish Mr. Bryant for his failed effort to steal a set of hedge clippers.

It doesn’t matter to the cult. They will take those hedge clippers and cut off their noses to spite their faces if they can only visit insane cruelty on a brown victim.

Meanwhile, this thug, this murderer, and this war criminal are walking around free.

Exhibit #23834234 in evidence to prove what LBJ said 55 years ago about the culture of white supremacy:

If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.

That is what motivates the MAGA cult and that is why they adore Trump while he kills them with criminal negligence in the Pandemic:

Image may contain: 1 person, text that says 'Corey Reynolds @coreyreynoldsLA Replying to @matthewjdowd Here's the truth; trump's supporters don't measure his success by what he does FOR them, they measure by what he does AGAINST ppl they don't like. That's why they see him as being "successful". This is why they will NEVER abandon him. His tormenting of the "others" sustains them.'

The deepest, truest, most essential campaign slogan for the entire MAGA Cult is simply this:

  1. This man was sentenced not for stealing hedge clippers but because he was a habitual offender. One of his previous crimes was armed robbery. This sentence seems excessive to me and I’m sure to plenty Trump supporters. Trump has shown concern over the country’s high incarceration rate.

    1. Irrelevant. If he was convicted of attempting to steal the hedge clippers, he should be punished for attempting to steal the hedge clippers. If he was actually convicted of armed robbery, he should have been punished for it then. A minor crime is a minor crime, not an excuse for prosecutors to get the sentence they wanted for a previous crime but couldn’t.

But even that is a moot point, because he was already sentenced to ten years hard labor for the armed robbery.

    2. It is one of the extremely rare occasions where Trump has shown some humanity. I chalk that up to his tendency to be influenced by flatter from celebrities, in this case, Kim Kardashian of all people. I’m glad you agree this is excessive. Cut out your first excuse-making sentence and your comment is a good one.

  2. The thing that gripes me, other than all of it, is that these “the law is the law” people will happily make excuses for the laws they break. A farmer destroys a beaver dam in a creek that runs through his fields, in flagrant violation of environmental laws, because he depends on that land for his livelihood and can’t afford to have it turned into a half-baked nature preserve that he can’t touch but still has to pay property taxes on. (Whether he’s correctly understanding the environmental laws is beside the point for our purposes.) But when he hears about would-be immigrants being deported, suddenly the law is the law. Even if it needs reform badly, people should still follow it, and if they don’t, they get what they get.

    1. Yep! I’ve seen this so many times. (The classic one I see a lot is justification of extreme use of force during a traffic stop, by someone who I know complains about all their parking tickets and speeding tickets…)

Something I’ve found really interesting as an Oregonian is Ammon Bundy’s response to the current situation – He shocked a lot of his right-wing supporters by coming out in favor of Black Lives Matter, the protests, and defunding the police. The people who adored him & his for staging an armed takeover of a government building and getting in a shootout with law officers, couldn’t believe he would support “the wrong people” graffiti-ing & attempting unarmed takeovers of government buildings and being physically attacked by law officers. You almost gotta hand it to him. A libertarian who actually believes in freedom for me AND for thee. I mean, his idea of freedom is, imo, totally crackpot, but at least he’s consistent!

  3. Do you support Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, or Black Lives Matter?

Do you believe the United States of America is a racist and oppressive country? Do you believe white people succeed in life because of “white privilege”? Do you believe the world is under assault by a killer coronavirus and we all need to wear masks and social distance ourselves in order to survive?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, congratulations. You are what is known in political parlance as a “useful idiot.”

Don’t get offended, I’m merely stating a fact. The useful idiot is the precise terminology your own leaders use to describe you. A useful idiot is someone who believes they are supporting a humanitarian political agenda, while in reality, they are supporting its exact opposite.
The term “useful idiot” was first coined by Vladimir Lenin to describe liberals and Democrats who thought they were working towards a utopian society, while in reality they were unwittingly supporting Communism. Under Communism, over 100 million people were murdered in the 20th century alone. Hundreds of millions of more people were raped, tortured, and forced into slave labor.

Today, these same Godless communists have infiltrated every area of our society and have taken complete control of the Democratic Party and our country’s teachers’ unions. What does this mean for you? It means if you support the Democratic Party, the teachers’ unions, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, or Black Lives Matter, then you support Communism.

If you support Communism, then by logical extension, you also support racism, intolerance, religious persecution, murder, torture, the eradication of the family, the removal of God from society, the destruction of Christianity (traditional Catholicism), the destruction of the Constitution, the end of free enterprise, the abolition of private property, the oppression of women, the genocide of the unborn, and the removal from society of everything that is good and noble.
If you’re a black person who supports Black Lives Matter, then it’s vitally important for you to realize that you are being used as shock troops – cannon fodder, if you will – by the very people whose policies do you the most harm (Democrats and teachers’ unions) against the very people whose policies do you the most good – conservatives and Trump supporters.

Your greatest problem isn’t racist policemen, it’s teachers’ unions run by the Democratic Party. They’re the ones who are providing poor education to your children and dooming them to a cycle of poverty and crime. They’re the ones who are not equipping your children to function in the world.

Imagine if they did. Imagine if the public schools of Detroit, Chicago, New York and elsewhere turned out wave after wave of highly educated and motivated students. What do you think those cities would look like in five years time? Ten years time?

If you’re a white person who supports Black Lives Matter, then you are as clueless as it comes. You think you’re supporting a useful and humanitarian cause, but you are actually doing the exact opposite (the definition of a useful idiot). By assisting BLM in protesting the smallest problem facing black Americans – racist policemen – you are ignoring the largest problem facing black Americans – corrupt and detrimental teachers’ unions.

If you’re a young person of any race reading this, be aware that every single thing you are being taught in school by your left-leaning teachers is a lie. Every. Single. Thing. They have no desire to tell you the truth because truth holds no value for them. They lie at the drop of a hat. They are using you for their own nefarious purposes. They consider you a useful idiot, while in reality, the majority of them are useful idiots. Want to drive your teacher into a sputtering rage of TDS idiocy? Show them this article. Don’t be surprised if they faint on the spot.

As for your education, you’re pretty much on your own. You will have to do a lot of reading, a lot of research, and a lot of thinking in order to discern reality from the fake history you’re being taught in school, and from the fake news that permeates our society. In almost every case – and I mean 99.9% of the time – what you see on television
news or read in the newspaper is a lie and the exact opposite of what you’re seeing and reading is the truth. Sound crazy? Welcome to Clown World 2020.

    1. The useful idiot is the precise terminology your own leaders use to describe you. A useful idiot is someone who believes they are supporting a humanitarian political agenda, while in reality, they are supporting its exact opposite.

One mark of a trumpanzee is their total inability to understand that aCcusation is projection. Accusationnis confession.

    2. To those who read the above.. please note how it is structured. It doesn’t matter what the Democrats or others in teachers unions or BLM want, because they are secretly being controlled by Communists. The problems with inner cities schools have nothing to do with funding issues, or structural issues with the families of inner city kids, it is all part of the Marxist conspiracy…. The Communists also control the news media.. and lie to you 99.9% of the time. The brilliant part of this is that you support communism even if you vehemently support free enterprise… if you support the Democrats, you support communism. You also then support “racism, intolerance, religious persecution, murder, torture”… note, even though all the evidence suggests that racists in this country are on the far right, it is really the communists who support it. Again, even if the vast majority of domestic terrorists in this country have been on the far right, it is the fault of the communists.

The fact that he can’t actually document any of this being true is only further proof that he is right. Wake up sheep!!!! Conspiracy theories like these only make sense if you don’t waste time thinking about them!!!

      1. @dove

Wait till you find out what the kindergartner teachers are up to. Fun with dick and Jane is actually…

well, I can’t tell you. Five year olds can be vicious.

      2. As a union public school teacher working in an inner city school, I’ve heard variations of this for years. Not as extreme, mind you, but it is common for people to think we are teaching fake history, suppressing religion, forcing LGBTQ ideology, and otherwise pushing a liberal agenda onto children.

But honestly, if they gave me a bigger budget I wouldn’t have to dole out my meager supplies to each according to his ability and to each according to his need. Also, it’s not my fault communist red works the best for classroom projects.

      3. @ lucky

There is no LGBTQ ideology. That’s a fanatasy of right wingers and christianists. “Leave us the hell alone and focus on your own damn families” is not much of anything to build an ideology on.

There is certainly a heterosexist ideology. Everyone is heterosexual. No one is gay. God doesnt likeit. And that justifies all of the harm dOne e to us for centuries. They don’t like it, and if we know what is good for us, we’ll do as they say.

As mark always says, accusation is confession

      4. @Neko

Thanks 🙂 I’m an art teacher, so I’m in the fun position of getting to know everyone in the school and getting to see them change and grow over time. Last year was my first year having seen a whole group of kids from 4K-5th grade, so it was particularly sad not getting to see them off at the end of the year.

    3. On the other hand, there’s also good news. Considering that high grade narcotic you’re sniffing, it looks like Mexico is going to pay for the wall after all.

      1. Reminds me of some years ago when Mark posted something about guns and one of these long comments came in. That comment, at least superficially, seemed to be reasonable. However, I recognized it right away as one that had been posted to a completely different site, on a post having nothing to do with gun violence or gun control. It was Zelda Dungeon, a fan site for the Legend of Zelda video game series. The actual post may have been a debate about whether or not the main character should use a gun.

Just goes to show that there are lots of bots and paid trolls who go out and leave comments to stir people up.

    4. I missed this yesterday as I was engaged in helping my grandson, a second grader, navigate the vagaries of on-line schooling, due to the pandemic. I am not sure what is more problematic, your idiocy or the problems involved in on-line schooling, which by the way was caused by the lack of seriousness of the man/party you seem to support/worship. I mention this because you are parroting their talking points. If this is not true then I have no idea what you are drinking, smoking if taking, but damn, you should market it. If you are not indeed ingesting anything, then the phrase out of it does not do justice to the fantasyland you live in.

  4. Another good column, Mark. I have written many times on these very pages that the rise of the Christian right, Has always been about power, money, and religious dominion.

and the election of Jabba the Trump…REVENGE.

  5. Add to this that friends of Trump are getting get out of jail early cards in order to protect them from COVID – the virus Trump has claimed is a hoax – when there does not seem to be much done to prevent the spread of the virus among ordinary prisoners…

  6. In reply to Trynis:
You forgot to mention how Trump’s friendship and/or admiration for Putin and this other guy in North Korea is a clear demonstration of his opposition to communism… If Trump gets reelected, I would not be surprised if he pulled a trick similar to what Putin recently did: get some kind of law, or constitutional change, or whatever vote, in order to maintain his power for as long as he wishes. Woe to your country then!

    1. These freaks ranting about communism somehow give Trump a pass on his affection for Vladimir Putin, an actual former KGB agent in the Soviet Union. Reading about Trump’s efforts to woo Vladimir are simply embarrassing. But guys like Trynis don’t read Deep State stuff like the just-released Senate Intel report or the Mueller Report or books. They just “know.”

Rather, it’s…the teachers’ unions that are to blame for the legacy of racism. I suppose if you live in an historical vacuum where white grievance is the air you breathe that anything is possible.

      1. Public schools are not truly public.

You have never seen anything guarded more ferociously than the white, upper-class public schools in the best neighborhoods of Marin. In Santa Barbara, the principal did an unannounced house check to make sure we were living in the district. She literally walked into the house through a back door and demanded to see their clothing in the closet. Some years before that our neighbor brought us a ballot to sign which they hoped would bar the (brown) kids from title 8 housing to be annexed into our district

      2. @tacoanybody So true. Segregation is alive and well, in its new forms – through tactics like that public school’s, by means of gentrification and white flight (especially where school funding is tied to local property taxes), through private schooling.

And, of course, through law enforcement – I remember a number of years ago a mother who was imprisoned for putting down her mother’s address when sending her kids to school, because the public school in her neighborhood was atrociously underfunded. Was that dishonest, and is honesty always best? Sure. But this was the educational equivalent of stealing bread to feed your family – and what sane person can look at this situation and think PRISON is the best possible solution to this deeply well-intentioned violation of the law, based in a mother’s love??

  7. The US has the highest incarceration rate on Earth. You don’t reach that pinnacle by having a reasonable attitude about who belongs in prison, and for how long.

  8. And yet, Mark, you claimed in a reply to me several weeks that you “wouldn’t lose any sleep” if Biden (should he be elected) decided not to have Trump investigated over criminal activities. If Trump is one of history’s most evil figures, why would you want him to go unpunished?

    1. @cbaducc

Corrupt, sociopathic, venal, banal, narcissistic, and vile absolutely.

But He’s only relatively evil. he’s a dime store anti christ, not a sak’s fifth avenue Antichrist.

      1. I think you are correct. But I would add that there is a good possibility that he would be considered mentally unfit to go to trial. It seems that he is mostly stupid and manipulated by a lot of powerful (through money) people who are even more evil than he is because they do know what they are doing. He is maybe a front, and a puppet, for people who would not want the general public to know who they are.

  9. @dovetruffle-

She was IMPRISONED for putting down her Mom’ s address?
You have *got* to be kidding me. I don’t believe that this is the equivalent of stealing bread, I think it’s insane. I have never utilized this practice, but then again there was plenty of room on my parents’ crazy hacienda to put down our crazytown address. Not everyone has this luxury.

I’d rather that mine were in Catholic school, but God has his reasons. Everything we make gets burned up in taxes and all of the accompanying needs of having eight kids. I tried, but after going broke on tuition and realizing God wasn’t saving us from this situation–despite my pleas–it became clear that the catholic schools don’t want/need/deserve them. Think about it. They really don’t deserve them, and we are probably the better for it. Who can teach the gospel authentically and selflessly when they are catering to things other than the gospel?
