I get this question a lot, often as an accusation and sometimes in good faith from baffled readers (most recently from an American Solidarity Party supporter who wrote the above).
Abortion reached its lowest rate under Obama/Biden and shot up 8% under Trump with the enthusiastic support of the “prolife” MAGA cult that lied he was the Most Prolife President Ever. Why?
Because the “prolife” MAGA Cult (with the honorable exception of Consistent Life Ethic Folk) passionately supports every sadistic GOP policy to punish the poor and the least of these, thereby amping up the *demand* for abortion while piously rubbing their Precious feet pins and using the unborn as human shields for all their cruelty, racism, and greed.
Democrats, contrary to the falsehood regurgitated in the question above, do not “promote” abortion. What they do is leave abortion up to women to decide for themselves: a policy created and upheld by a court dominated by the GOP for 50+ years. With the reckless Dobbs decision, what the MAGA “prolife” cult is now committed to is an economic policy of intensely pressuring the poor to abort and then finding new and sadistic ways to punish them for doing what they themselves pressured them to do–and to punish all women with ridiculous proposals ranging from the death penalty, to prison, to requirements for travel papers for movement between states, to assumption of guilt for miscarriages.
At present, the GOP leadership (which never intended for the great cash cow of Roe to go away) is riven by chaos by the MAGA crazies who now dominate the party and is spitballing a maelstrom of insane ideas for punishing their victims with draconian penalties and micromanaging control, in no small part because their great orange captain has zero interest in abortion, but does have a taste for misogyny and so whipsaws between various spitball ideas with the vague idea of satisfying his misogynist base, but also not losing the vote of women. Beyond that, he could not care less about the unborn, except as human shields for his real loves: mammon and lawless power.
The Cult has no interest at all in making childrearing or supporting a family easier, because that might cost them precious, precious money. So their whole focus is on hoarding money and punishing the poor and brown (because cruelty feels like power and “retribution” to them) thereby spitefully forcing the poor to abort. At the same time, it aims to incoherently punish the poor for having “too many” children (because that is what they tell themselves “welfare queens” cunningly do to game the system), and to punish them when the crushing economic burden they bear forces them to abort (while piously lecturing them on being “open to life”) and threatening them with the fires of hell. Of the fact that the number one abortifacient in the US is poverty they have not one word to say and they confidently declare that a living wage is a trivial issue and shriek “BUT ABORTION!” to blot out the growing cries of their consciences.
In short, it is not Dems who “promote” abortion, it is the overwhelming majority of the “prolife” MAGA Cult of Death in love with selfishness and cruelty.
So I not only have no qualms of conscience about voting Dem, I feel bound in conscience before God Almighty to do so, not only for the sake of the unborn, but for the sake of my country which now faces the greatest threat to our constitutional order since the Confederacy because of this small coterie of lunatics who think the rapist fraud being sentenced today is a badass for being a felon. Included in this demographic of violent, America-hating weirdos is 8% of the total population, who want to “outlaw” abortion (meaning punish women) but who are actively laboring to sharpen and increase demand for abortion even as they blame the victims they themselves create by their greed, selfishness, spite, and sadism. They are determined (with a larger minority of white supremacist, QANON, authoritarian, and power hungry lunatics) to impose their will on the other 92% of Americans, no matter how deadly that regime will be as it hides behind the unborn as their human shields.
What the “prolife” Cult of Death and Authoritarian Rule could never be bothered to do, in their rush to impose their will by blood, iron, force, law, and fear, was what the early Church did by persuasion, grace, and trust in the power of the Holy Spirit: win hearts and minds and create that civilization of love they used to insincerely parrot JPII about. Not believing the gospel themselves, they have put their trust in a dimestore antichrist to save them–and to do it not by their old lie of “loving them both” but by punishing their enemies (including the present Pope, whom they hate). It is an appalling disgrace, and the overwhelming majority of the “prolife” movement, having abandoned the Consistent Life Ethic, is now a deadly heresy, not only at war with most Americans, but with the gospel as well. Like all heresies, it has taken one piece of the gospel and metastasized it into the Only Thing That Matters and is now weaponizing it against everything else. That’s why it passionately defends a rapist adulterer and traitor who mocks both his rape victims and the disabled, who pours out a torrent of lies, who praises Nazis and KKK, who helped kill a million Americans with COVID, and who threatens a permanent regime rooted in “retribution” and made in the image and likeness of Putin, Orban, Modi, and Mussolini, not the Christ they shamelessly blaspheme as they hail that rapist fraud as the crucified and sinless Son of God.
There is only one party that has a prayer of stopping that, and it is not the American Solidarity Party. To those conservative Christians still in thrall to the old lie “Vote GOP or the Baby Gets it” and who are still superstitiously afraid of incurring ritual impurity if they vote Dem, then I urge them to at least not actively sin by voting for Trump and I do urge them to at least throw their vote away on the ASP. But if you want to actually do something to help rather than just bury your talent in the ground, vote Dem at every level–local, state, and federal–and help bring about the extinction of this traitorous crime syndicate called the GOP before they end our constitutional order for good. Otherwise, as the economic and political chaos grows you will, as with all Faustian Bargains, sell your soul and get nothing in return as abortion rates spike under Trump again and disastrous chaos and violence engult the US and, very possibly, the world.

On one hand, prudence in judgment regarding abortion results in murdering unborn babies.
On the other hand, can’t have one without the other—capital punishment also exercises prudence in judgment resulting murder of very much real people.
All arguments defending and upholding death penalty can be reworded to support abortion as well.
And if anyone disallows abortion, but with exceptions, e.g., to lethally damaged unborn, they automatically assume guilt for all people wrongfully convicted and executed.
I think it was you who remarked that it took centuries for Rome to finally ban blood games across the empire because of popular outrage.
It also took centuries to make people understand that murder is evil, regardless of relative social status, personal vendettas or any other reason.
It would take the same amount of education to make people realize the cruel reality of abortion, but considering how some groups are already trying to reinstate blood games, how the list of capital crimes is being expanded instead of reduced, how people are calling for lynch mobs against increasingly trivial transgressions… I think we’re further away from that goal than closer to it.
1st John 4:19: If we cannot bring ourselves to love other people, who we see, how can we love unborn babies that we cannot see (ignore ultrasound for a moment), but who constantly evoke vivid images of difficulty and toil, especially if they’re going to require additional care?
Considering the state of our group morality, it’s obvious that banning abortion was never a goal in and of itself, but an insidious means to a sinister goal.
With the eyes of faith, one can believe that 128 dividing cells is a human soul created in the Divine Image. Absent faith this is impossible. The language of “willful murder of babies” makes no sense to the secular mind — it’s perfectly obvious to anyone who’s ever had an early miscarriage that the loss may have been painful, but was not a “baby”.
This is why the “Pro-Life” folks come in for ridicule. They seem to be talking nonsense.
Secular Pro-Life would like a word.
More broadly, I fully agree that the Pro-Life™ Movement seems to be talking nonsense from the secular pro-choice perspective, but at least part of that is because of pro-choice argumentum ad dicācitātem (if you’ll permit me to coin a phrase), people basically asserting that the belief is unreasonable and mocking them on that basis, rather than attempting to demonstrate that the belief is unreasonable.
I understand the point you are making, but won’t concede that it’s “perfectly obvious to anyone who’s ever had an early miscarriage that the loss may have been painful but was not a ‘baby'”. As someone who has knowingly had an early miscarriage, I know I lost a baby and grieved heavily. It does not matter to me what he or she looked like, at the stage of life they were in. They were at the stage of life where it is normal for a new human to look how they do. They don’t *have* to look like what we typically think of when we say “baby”. What matters is that I co-created a new, distinct human entity with a soul. “Looks like a baby” vs. “Doesn’t look like a baby” is shallow reasoning. A 100-year-old looks a lot different from a newborn in a lot of ways, and so do people born with certain deformities. Looks aren’t what counts here. It is normal to look a certain way through each stage of life.
I understand that certain people come from a different perspective, and would find my grief over my child to be unreasonable, and my definition of “child” worthy of ridicule, and how this difference in perspectives is problematic for them. You’re right–it requires debating on a bit of a higher level, which most don’t seem to be willing to do, unfortunately, because the majority of people prefer practicality and keeping things simple.
The Republicans real goal is tax cuts for the rich. The white working class is distracted by culture war issues, while the rich pick their pockets.
The Democrats are also to blame, as instead of pushing harder for a higher minimum wage, they focus on BS issues like transgender bathrooms. Neither party seems to care about the working people of this country.
Excellent response to the issue of abortion. Well said. Describes my feelings in the issue.
I feel like this post from New Wave Feminists is relevant: https://itsallwearecalledtodo.tumblr.com/post/754266670151892992
Unfortunately, by “this post” I mean “these screenshots that someone posted to Tumblr” because I don’t know where it was originally posted. I’m guessing Facebook, which I avoid on principle.
While in the Senate, Harris voted against the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” which would ensure that an infant born alive during an attempted abortion is afforded the same degree of medical care as any other newborn of the same gestational age. Thus, she became an advocate for the termination of viable children who survive the initial abortion effort. She is committed to overturning the “Hyde Amendment” that would have the federal government help pay for abortions with government funds taken from tax revenue. Walz complements Harris’ radical abortion position and in 2023 as governor signed legislation in Minnesota that placed no limitations on when a woman may end the life of her unborn baby. That is akin to what we suffer with in Maryland where abortion is legal for any reason whatsoever through all nine months of pregnancy. This is literally infanticide. While pro-life includes more than pregnancy, this strikes me as too egregious to ignore as a believer committed to the sanctity of life.
The progressive Jesuit AMERICA magazine recently stated, “Ms. Harris’s commitment to religious liberty has been widely questioned. As senator, she questions Brian Buescher’s membership in the Knights of Columbus during his confirmation hearings to be a U.S. District Court judge in Nebraska. ‘Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?’ she asked Mr. Buescher, seeming to imply that adherence to Catholic moral teaching would disqualify him from the appointment.”
You talk the politics of abortion. Yet your Church says abortiin is the pre-eminent issue in the election. Seems like the anti-abortion candidates should be your ballot choice, as a Catholic.
I am. Because I pay attention to the anti-abortion results of Dem policies rather than the empty performative piety of the MAGA cult.
