The fundamental problem of Fundamentalism, whether atheist or religious, is the same. Whether it’s a chest-beating Youtube announcing that RICHARD DAWKINS DESTROYS THE BIBLE IN FIVE MINUTES!!!!, a Bible thumper announcing that SCRIPTURE WRECKS ROMAN ‘MARY’ IDOLATRY!!!! or a Trad Catholic announcing that THIS BIBLICAL PASSAGE SHOWS FRANCIS IS A HERETIC!!!!!, what all Fundamentalism has in common is a resolute refusal to treat the Bible as we would any other extraordinarily complex and subtle collection of texts from antiquity spanning a thousand years and written in three dead languages, addressed to peoples and cultures whose worldview we can scarcely imagine, much less instinctively inhabit. The problem ain’t what we don’t know. It’s what we know that just ain’t so. Make use of the enormous amount of scholarship afforded by the Church about this, the most studied text in history instead of just giving your hot takes and gut reactions.
