Jesus tells us not to cast our pearls before swine, nor to give what is sacred to dogs. It’s long past time to face the fact that dedicated Gun Cultists whose first, last, and only response to the slaughter that is American common life is to call for more guns are liars and enemies and not partners in debate. The one and only time they should be argued with is for the purpose of exposing them as malignant liars to innocents who are looking on as third parties. But don’t waste your breath trying to persuade dedicated cultists. Their problem lies in the will, not in the intellect. They don’t need more facts. They need to repent. And only the Holy Spirit can bring that about. Our task is to forgive them, love them, pray for them to repent–and then work to defeat them, not waste time trying to educate them.
Those who have not made a fundamental commitment to lies and exploded logic are educable and can usually be spotted in a few minutes. They are thinking of victims first. The Gun Cult–as is typical with conservatives in the Age of Trump–always think first, last, and always of themselves and of the tiny circle of those who are extensions of their egos. Their first demand is not “DON’T BLAME ME!”, but “What can be done to fight this horror?” Their first thought is “How can I help?” not “DON’T TOUCH MY GUN!” They listen to ideas beyond the kneejerk cry “MOAR GUNS WILL FIX THIS!” They actually go and check out what, for example, the bishops have said and the practical steps actual experts have recommended to reduce gun violence. They don’t ask “questions” designed shut down all discussion like, “I suppose you want everybody to not be able to defend themselves?”
Such people may have partly imbibed false information and be factually incorrect about how to serve the common good. But they are not People of the Lie, selfishly committed to putting guns over human life and thinking first, last, and only about themselves while only caring about victims only as human shields for their own satanically selfish ideological commitment to all-consuming “gun rights”.

The NRA opposes any gun control. They think that mental patients, convicted felons, virtually anybody should be allowed to purchase guns, even assault rifles. Their solution to the problem of gun violence is everyone carrying guns. Essentially making the US an armed camp. So, if I want to run over to Safeway to pickup bread and milk, I should be packing a pistol, just in case.
Insanity.
I have called this our particular idolatry for a long time. It is the Moloch to which we all have agreed to offer our children up in a steady stream, unblinking and without reservation. Moloch always demands more sacrifice and we have shown, repeatedly, that we are more than willing, even eager to comply. We are so deeply in thrall to this idol that we have long ago lost the ability to observe our blood-soaked surroundings for what they are.
Im not sure what can actually be done at this point other than universal background checks because its true there are already so many guns out there.
I mean yea we could ban ARs but I dont think that will prevent mass shooters from still doing shootings or even attaining the ARs if they really want them. Its really just sad tbh. I think bigger investments in mental health and wellness checks.
Assault rifles are much more dangerous than pistols. Look at the body count of mass shootings involving assault rifles vs pistols. Having fired all sorts of weapons in the Marines, I can state that assault rifles are far more dangerous than other firearms.
Yes, there should be background checks and red flag laws. We have to do something.
Rifles are certainly more lethal in effect, but handguns kill far more people because of their portability and concealable nature. They tend to be the most readily at hand option for things like road rage disputes, domestic violence etc.
In urban areas like Baltimore, where I am from, cheap handguns do most of the killing. This being drug deals gone bad, botched robberies, etc. The NRA will prattle that killers will just use other means,such as knives, baseball bats,etc, but that is false. Nothing handier than a 9mm pistol in your pocket to visit mayhem on our communities.
