It is vital that you get up to speed on what the attack on Venezuela means

It means a helluva lot more than an oil grab or a stunt to distract from the Epstein files.

Let Heather Cox-Richardson lay out the Big Picture for you, as she so often and so well does:

  1. This is why separation of powers, I.e. checks and balances. Unfortunately, we have a rogue President, a supine Congress and a right wing Supreme Court willing to let Trump do whatever he wants. Not a good combination.

  2. My one consolation during this time is that, ever since Trump sidelined the social conservatives at the RNC in 2024, a small handful of not-entirely-corrupted souls in the MAGAsphere – including several people whose work I follow – have become increasingly willing to criticize his actions in the public forum despite the unceasing torrent of venom from those still convinced of his demigodhood. As of this most recent act of weaponized sociopathy, even The Remnant Newspaper – which barely made a peep after the 2024 debacle and has conveniently failed to mention Trump’s unconditional support for Netanyahu while strongly criticizing Israel for their treatment of Palestinians – has finally come out and said plainly: “This is NOT what we voted for.”

Sadly, I very much doubt this will cause any of them to seriously reconsider their political support for Trump or the Republicans in general – after all, as Mark so aptly puts it, “Opposition to abortion taketh away the sins of the world” (despite the fact that Trump doesn’t actually oppose abortion and sees pro-lifers as a liability to his cause) – but who knows? At the very least, it might convince some of them to either give up on politics altogether or throw their votes away on third parties instead. In the meantime – despite my fervent desire to see the two-party system dismantled and groups like the American Solidarity Party have their day in the limelight – I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a big blue wave in November.

  3. Thanks Mark. This prompted me to contact all 3 of my red-state congressional folks to give an earful: the GOP can stand up and stop him. (But we all know, they won’t).

This afternoon’s police state action in Minneapolis ought to light a fire under some GOP folks, but it will instead be explained away in a flurry of talking points.

I sure hope that pottage of “winning” in the short term tastes good. Or maybe Turkish Delight ala Narnia is a better metaphor…
