Addiction fools your body, soul, and spirit that what is poison is food. That goes for addictions of the spirit too. For some people, the poison of hatred has become more important than the food of love. The MAGA cult is so deeply addicted to it that they will let their own families suffer and die rather than give up the rush of watching those they hate suffer and die.
One way that addiction manifests itself is the peculiarly American habit of fantasizing that we believe in one nation under God with liberty and justice for all while simultaneously fighting tooth and nail to say, “The wealthy and powerful should be allowed to rape our children without consequence since they are Great Men Doing Important Work but woe betide a poor person enjoying two minutes of relief from their crushing existence on my dime!”
So the MAGA mind that spends its time fretting over poor people buying soda while also telling us:

If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.
MAGA Christians are addicted to Mammon and white racism. Only the grace of Christ will be able to break its power–and they will have to actively cooperate with that grace for it to happen, or be destroyed by their sin. And such sin does not just destroy the guilty. It takes many innocents down with it, which will only compound the sin of the guilty.
Meanwhile, In THE ABOLITION OF MAN, C.S. Lewis astutely observed that to speak of “Man’s power over nature” is ultimately to speak of a few men’s power over all other men using nature as an instrument. This is true of American wealth and power too. It means the enormous concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few men and weaponized against, not just America’s foreign enemies, but against the American people by the few who wield the wealth and power. Their success depends on how well they can blind their duped prey to the people who are trying to warn them they are viewed as prey by the people the duped prey fantasize they will someday be. Not all, indeed not even most Americans are blind to this as the Cult is. We have the power to resist and win.
