Actual Christian spirit: The love of God is so all-conquering that nothing, not even crucifixion can stop Him! We have nothing to fear and can love freely!
If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies; who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Ro 8:31–39)
Fake MAGA Reactionary antichrist spirit: How can I be happy when a Pope I hate takes a moment to honor a priest whom I hate because he does not drive out and ostracise LGBTQ people I hate? What is the Faith about if not the constant and continuous fear that my power is being diminished and I will be replaced by those I hate? I can only be saved by ceaseless fear of and warfare against people I hate, who I whisper to myself are replacing me, and who are a constant reminder that I don’t trust God at all, but trust only my own fear-and-hate-driven strength.

Same sex attraction (SSA) can be thought of as a handicap. Being normal or heterosexual is easier in life. If someone hated people in wheelchairs and advocated violence towards them, we would call him a terrible person. We would not call him a “good Christian.” Then why is it acceptable to hate gays with such intensity?

“The surest way to work up a crusade in favor of some good cause is to promise people they will have a chance of maltreating someone. To be able to destroy with good conscience, to be able to behave badly and call your bad behavior ‘righteous indignation’ — this is the height of psychological luxury, the most delicious of moral treats.” ― Aldous Huxley
Christianity is not based on hate, but on love. Hatred of gays, immigrants and non Christians is not Christian. It is a perversion of Christianity.
Alas, one of my sons has succumbed to conservative Catholic bro culture. He’s a really smart kid, even brilliant maybe, but his engineer’s brain has a problem with nuance and journeys of faith. He’s absolutely *obsessed* with Fr. James Martin. Nothing I can say to him will convince him that he’s not a heretic. I talk about building bridges and all that, but he says “He’s giving them false hope!” I’m sure my son is forming his opinion from the young Catholic guys online that hobnob together at certain sites. Some of them meet up in person and smoke cigars together. They feel like big men if they have a wife in the kitchen at home. My son really looks up to them. We constantly remind him that there’s a big difference between piety/sanctity and sanctimoniousness. Much of what he says is fear driven. He has been brainwashed into thinking that the majority of people go to hell. When he says things like that, I tell him he’s insulting God and giving God a bad name –that it’s literally anti-evangelism. Sometimes it seems like we’re getting through to him, but then he reverts back to his alarmist state.
One thing that I have noticed about right Wing Catholics is the idea that God is out to get us. That God will get us on a technicality and send us to Hell for some minor infraction. Their philosophy is that God is a strict policeman, rather than a loving father. They become obsessed with rules, especially regarding anything to do with sexuality. They obsess on other people’s sex lives.
I wonder if this mindset is the result of an inability to think. God gave us a mind to think. To appreciate nuance. We are not robots, but the Catholic Right seems to advocate a “robotic Catholicism.” Rules, rules and more rules.
I’ve known people who were drawn into Right Wing Catholic organizations. They were searching for certainty, for black or white religion and morality. They didn’t find it. And they won’t.
