It’s Not Every Day You Find Gibbon and Chesterton Agreeing

But there it is:

In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. ― Edward Gibbon

If there is one fact we really can prove, from the history that we really do know, it is that despotism can be a development, often a late development and very often indeed the end of societies that have been highly democratic. A despotism may almost be defined as a tired democracy. As fatigue falls on a community, the citizens are less inclined for that eternal vigilance which has truly been called the price of liberty; and they prefer to arm only one single sentinel to watch the city while they sleep. ― G.K. Chesterton, The Everlasting Man

It will be up to the American people whether they want these guys to be watchmen on the walls who roused the guard or prophets who foresaw our doom.

It will be interesting to see if Americans have a tipping point between our love of ease and not having to bother about other people and our fear and outrage when the crimes of the Administration start to hurt us so much that we act to end it.

As the lies of the Cult and the torpor of that nation while the Administration sends its top secret info to Whoever and disappears innocents into El Salvadoran hell holes makes clear, we have long grown numb to traitorous stupidity. It won’t be till we learn that Trump texted the GPS location for Putin’s targeted ICBM strike on US soil that lots of Americans start to stir in their sleep, and many of them will say, “Not my town, not my problem. Damn blue staters had it coming.”

Those who will not have virtue as king in their city shall have Pain as their tyrant. We used to live in a country where it was taken for granted that the rights of human beings came “not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God” as JFK put it.

Now we live in a tyranny where it is the pious and “prolife” who defend the proposition that “illegals” have no rights at all, that the state unilaterally decides who is “legal” and that when the Tyrant arbitrarily declares you to have no rights, that is definitive proof you don’t.

And to rationalize it all, they rub their Precious Feet fetish and tell you that you have to “focus on Abortion” while themselves focusing all their time and energy on lying to defend crimes against humanity…

as “prudential judgments” justified by their hatred of LGBTQ scapegoats:

Heresy tends to morph into its own shadow. The “prolife” heresy is now overwhelmingly dominated by people who defend focused hatred and cruelty toward children while they use the unborn as human shields for it all, because defending Trump’s cruelty, not the unborn is what the heresy is about now:

There is something particularly “‘Catch Me If You Can’ Serial Killer” about his use of his victims as props while he stabs them in the back. He gets off on mocking his victims.

  1. MAGA seems to revel in cruelty. Cruelty towards immigrants, the poor, transgenders, etc. And yet,so many of them consider themselves to be “Good Christians.” Indeed, so many Evangelicals and right wing Catholics think that they, and they alone speak for God. The spiritual arrogance of thinking that you and you alone speak for the Almighty is breathtaking.

Some of the MAGA Catholics imply that not voting for Trump is a “sin” and that you are jeopardizing your salvation by not voting for him. It’s enough to make you vomit.

  2. WRT Eric Sammons’ assertion about being on the side of the angels, I wonder how he spun the executive order expanding access to IVF?

  3. The whole transgender thing is less than 1% of the population. It is a bright, shiny object intended to distract the not so bright away from the real goal. To pick our pockets. The tariff tax is a regressive tax that will cost the average family $2100, while taxes for billionaires are cut.

So we cut taxes for billionaires, raise taxes in the form of tariffs for the average person, and throw the poor under the bus. All the while cloaked in phony religious piety. MAGA is bovine scat.
