The Phony Religious Liberty Commission

A little while back, the Tyrant established a phony Religious Liberty Commission to pander to self-pitying white conservatives who love to cosplay as Christian martyrs, bravely standing up to fake “threats” from supposed “liberal persecution” when a coffee cup design is not to their taste at Christmas or lying that a harrassed clerk saying “Happy Holidays” is making “War on Christmas”.

ICE likewise likes to pretend that they are bravely fighting gangs and drug dealers while instead hiding their faces and beating the shit out of women, farm workers, zip tying children and assaulting innocents at Mass.

And now, they are running terrified from ordinary people who simply figured out how to organize against their crime syndicate.

There’s a reason MAGA Christians and ICE behave like bullies and cowards: They are the same people. And funnily enough, they are the biggest persecutors of actual Christians (and others) on our soil. But since their victims are named Jesus y Maria, they don’t count.

I mention all this because those gimlet-eyed champions of Religious Liberty on the Commission seem downright studiously unaware that when it comes to the assaults on religious liberties the Tyrant and his sycophants say they care about, the call is very clearly coming from inside the house.

Or take Carrie Prejean Boller. She is on the stupid, phony Religious Liberty Commission–and is a visible-from-space anti-semite.

And here Boller is with fellow Commission member Bp. Robert Barron, palling around in much the same way Cardinal Dolan pals around with the Anti-Semite-in-Chief!:

“But Mark! Trump is pro-Israel! He can’t be anti-semitic!”

The Cult uses support for Israel the way it uses the unborn: as human shields. It is chockablock with anti-semites chanting “JEWS WILL NOT REPLACE US!” and kooks like Candace Owens. Just as they rub their Precious Feet pin to absolve themselves of the murder of children and other innocents, so they rub their Israeli flag pins to absolve themselves of their Jew-hatred.

Watch and learn:

This is remarkably un-complex and Deacon Steven Greydanus breaks it down for us into three easy steps:

  1. Carrie Prejean Boller is clearly comfortable with antisemitic conspiracy theories and disinformation.
  2. Anyone as comfortable with antisemitism as Carrie Prejean Boller has no place on a Religious Liberty Commission.
  3. Any respectable Catholic, especially a shepherd of souls, should refuse to serve on a Religious Liberty Commission that makes a place for Carrie Prejean Boller.

Yup.

Which brings me to my next point, of which more tomorrow.

  1. The whole religious liberty thing is a fraud. What the religious right wants is to be able to inflict their religious views on other people. This is their idea of “religious freedom.”

Years ago, I knew a man who was a reformed sinner and an in your face Christian. He would confront and argue with people about religion. He was quite obnoxious and confrontational. People would avoid him. He said that his aggressiveness in “converting” other people was just his practicing his religion. Nonsense. Freedom of religion means freedom from other people’s religion.

  2. pro-Israel but antisemitic is not the contradiction it first seems.

All it means is that they’re anti-semites who simply hate Muslims more and see the IDF as a means to exterminate them.

    They’re bigots who see a bigger picture…

Of course they have no problem labeling any of us anti-Semitic if we even softly suggest that maybe it’s not good to slaughter ALL of the women and children who turn up at food aid stations.

  3. Like most pronouncements from these cowards and bullies, whatever they choose to call it – religious liberty in this case – is the exact polar opposite of the reality. “Religious liberty” for so many who vocally and performatively call out for its defense is interpreted hyper-narrowly to mean (and only mean) publicly protected liberty for a particular manifestation of a particular flavor of right-wing Christianity/Catholicism. In their intent, no such liberty will be extended to our Muslim brothers and sisters, to our non-Zionist Jewish brothers and sisters, or to any other religious community, including and especially those Christian communities seeking to follow a Gospel of non-violence and care for the other. Young people see this and it’s a big part of why polling numbers for organized religion continue to fall.
