Mario Guevara once praised Trump as a “smart man” who’d boost the economy and uphold “moral values.”
Now the veteran Spanish-language journalist is detained by ICE and facing deportation.
“Next time, we need to vote in a wiser way,” he told me.
Irony doesn’t get more brutal than this.
When the Nazis invaded Ukraine, they were initially welcomed as liberators by a population that had a bellyful of Stalin.
That feeling quickly went away.
As near as I can make out, Latino culture seems to break down along class rather than ethnic lines, which is why a surprising number of Latinos supported Trump. Only now are Latino Trump supporters figuring out that Trump and his white supremacist cult do break everything down according to race and skin color and that voting Trump while brown offers you no protection against the American Gestapo.
And the sociopathic narcissism of the Cult guarantees that no matter how many times he callously betrays a segment of his base, their complete lack of empathy for any human being who is not the Self or an extension of the Self means that they will never care if even another MAGA Cultist suffers at his hands.
Hope they wise up in 2026 and 2028–assuming (which is not a given) elections will be permitted by the Regime.

Hispanic “machismo” might contribute to Hispanic men voting for a man over a woman. Even if that man is a racist white man. I think it’s worth noting that twice Trump has defeated women, but once was defeated by a man. I hate to say it, but the Democrats need to run a straight white man, who USA Governor in 2028. Forget the DEI business, they need to win.
No DEI business, like Obama?
Here’s the thing: the losses of Clinton and Harris had far less to do with the fact that they were women than it did with the open contempt their campaigns displayed towards their left flank. The Clinton campaign pretty much ignored the warnings, advice and assistance that were being offered by those in the Bernie camp regarding the swing states that she lost; and the Harris campaign went out of its way to silence and ostracize anybody who spoke out against the administration’s policy on Gaza, despite the fact that at the time it was like a 70-30 issue among Democrats.
On both occasions they tried to run a “paint-by-the-numbers” campaign, where they took the votes of entire demographic groups for granted, to the point where they were openly antagonistic towards them, all in order to appeal to the mythical and elusive “moderate Republican”. That is an institutional problem that the Democratic Party needs to reckon with, and running a straight white male is not a magic bullet that will miraculously fix it.
Besides, the majority of the Democratic Party presidential candidates that have lost the election, have been in fact, straight white men. So I think you’re suffering from a bit of a selection bias.
Yes, the moderate Republican is like the unicorn. Talked about, but never actually seen.
Yes, most Presidential losers were straight, white men, as were the winners. In the old days, it was only straight, white men, except perhaps James Buchanan, was possibly gay.
I doubt that Harris or Hillary get another chance. Harris seems annoyed. So what?
“Hispanic “machismo” might contribute to Hispanic men voting for a man over a woman.”
How would explain the current president of Mexico?
Well you’re not entirely wrong.
The thing that worries me: Ousting the regime means putting for a viable opponent in the next election, and the Democratic Party doesn’t exactly have the best track record here. It would not surprise me in the slightest if they did something stupid like nominate Hillary Clinton again. Because the last two rejections didn’t matter, right? Surely the American electorate will line up and eat their spinach this time!
The thing that does give me hope: I honestly don’t think Trump will run again. The Constitution aside (and he has proven himself entirely willing to ignore it), his age and health are against him. And if MAGA has a successor in mind, I haven’t seen it. I don’t think J.D. Vance is it. And Stephen Miller can’t run because you can’t run for President when you have to sleep upside down during daylight hours.
It won’t matter who the Democrats run next year or in 28. There’s no way Trump will allow elections. Or more likely, he will simply declare opposition candidates and parties to be domestic terror organizations, and lock them up.
They’re not even trying to hide the fact that we live in a fascist regime anymore.
I think some white men are waking up to him – an older (86-year-old) relative of mine voted for him but told my husband today that Trump’s performance at the UN was a complete embarrassment for the U.S. Depending on who runs again I don’t know if he would make it, especially if the economy turns on him. Everyone has an expiration date – sometimes it takes a while.
You really should watch Trump’s UN speech in its entirety. I don’t know if the guy has lost it or if he never had it. But the man is barking mad.
Good luck taking your personal Appeal To Caesar with a surname like “Guevara”. Laura Loomer will see the file and go ape about The Motorcycle Diaries.
My read is that Trump in 2024 perfected a diabolically clever weaponisation of right-wing intersectionality:
(a) To white (and Asian, Indian and Jewish) women, he could say: We’ll protect you from the scary Black and Brown men . And the hairy individuals in dresses who want to invade your changing rooms. And in a country just short of 400,000,000 people, it’s not hard to find examples like Antonio Ibarra, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, José Inez García Zárate and Decarlos Brown Jr that you can run on repeat play if you have access to, oh, I don’t know, a cable news network.
(b) To men, Trump could say: You’ve lost employment opportunities and social status because Women control the education system and punish boys just for being boys. They give all the well-paid, indoor, “email jobs” to other women while sending the manly manual jobs to the Third World. They punish you and label you “toxic” for harmless ironic joking. Trump aimed this primarily at White males but it seemed to work just as well on a certain number of Black and Hispanic men too.
The fact that the most anti-Trump demographic – Black women – has become even more solidly anti-MAGA tends to confirm this interpretation, since they are the group offered nothing whatsoever by Trump, unless you are a highly eccentric individual (hi Candace Owens!) who estimates she can grift enough that she won’t need to care.
