A Message for the Penitent Trump Voter

Welcome to the Resistance! Glad to have you aboard!

One of the things the Christian tradition urges us to do is called an “examination of conscience”. Think of it as the second thing you do after doing the first good act, which was facing the fact that you have sustained a really terrible wound through your sin of Trump support and need treatment.

Now that you have admitted that you were wrong, you have to do a thorough job of cleaning the wound your sin did your conscience (or, more precisely, of letting God clean the wound) so you will not develop multiple horrible infections that weaken or even kill you.

In the case of your previous and now-repented choice to support Trump, you need to examine your conscience to make sure the wound is not filled with even the smallest traces of bacteria-filled bullshit like, “I just didn’t know what kind of man he was and can’t be blamed for being fooled.”

You knew.

The pile of bullshit he stood on top of was as tall as his skyscrapers. So admit that you knew what kind of a monster he was when you supported him, but you chose to lie to yourself out of any number of worthless excuses. You knew. You simply didn’t care. So repent all the lies you cling to in order to try to mitigate the guilt of your sin and, instead, hand your sin in all its stench and filth over to God. God will forgive you as he forgives all sins. And you will no longer have to go on lying to yourself.

Clean the wound so it can heal.  Be free of all the lies of the Cult.

  1. Agreed on all counts. But I can already hear my MAGA friends and family’s response, because I have had this conversation with them dozens of times. Here is the sticking point: “You knew. You simply didn’t care.”

Their response: Of course, he’s a monster. But the Democrats are just as bad if not worse!

And then follows a long rant about abortion or gays or cops or gay cops or who gets to use which bathroom or drag queens at the library or who knows what. Doesn’t matter. It all boils down to: American politics no longer has anything to do with integrity, character, or truth. It’s a team sport.

I am becoming more and more convinced that our nation doesn’t need a return to rationality. We need an exorcism.

    1. Don’t make abortion just another of the issue. This is a serious problem and one that troubles many consciences every election cycle.

      1. Don’t make the unborn the opposite of, rather than related to, every form of human life the MAGA cult of death wants to rob, harm, rape, exploit, oppress, and murder.

  2. We need to be serious about our problems, such as wealth inequality. Focus on issues like the minimum wage, which has not moved in 15 years and stop obsessing on culture war distractions such as transgender sports.

  3. Sound advice, but I’ve never met a single penitent Trump voter.

I haven’t even heard wild rumors of such a creature. Not one. Even those who are themselves being financially decimated by Trump never have a bad word to say.

    1. They are extraordinarily rare creatures. But not a myth. My daughter’s dorm mate is former MAGA. Talks with my daughter were not the sole cause but went a long to way to changing her mind.

And here is the thing we need to keep in mind. The die-hard MAGA cult member who thinks the great Cheeto Pedo can do no wrong? They are a TINY minority in this country. TINY. Just incredibly loud. What we do have a sizeable portion of in this country are fairly well meaning normies who have been turned off by the boneheaded excesses of the Democratic Party over the past 40 years and are so busy trying to keep the lights on and the family fed that they devote perhaps 3% of their attention to politics. Trump is terrible at many things, but he is a master of theater and for whatever reason he appeals to those people in their 3% attention.

Democrats don’t. It’s tragic. No one on Earth is better at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory than the United States Democratic Party. It’s like they try to fail. Trump should be the easiest horse in the race to beat, but the Dems can’t even seem to get out of the gate.

And when they do occasionally produce a great communicator who appeals to a wide swath of voters (hi, Bernie!) the DNC leadership does everything they can to push that person out.

      1. It is mathematically impossible for us to be in the situation we’re in if die-hard MAGA was a tiny minority in this country. They are, at barest minimum, 35-40%.

The voted for this three times. Every indication points to the near-certain probability they would do so a fourth time, and very well may yet. This is not even vincible ignorance. It is willful and gleeful embrace of evil.

The only form of regret I ever hear from MAGA followers is when the harm they intended for others falls on them as well. I know many dozens of these people in my everyday life. They are not “normies”, except possibly by outward appearance.

They love seeing immigrant children and old ladies slammed to the ground and beaten and put in concentration camps. The are beside themselves with glee when they see Trump having political opponents arrested for being political opponents. They want fascism. They are in no way passive onlookers being bullied into anything by some tiny radical minority.

The DNC is useless because it has no core ideas except that the most senior members of the party – usually ancient octogenarians, are entitled to the White House as a sinecure reward for decades of loyalty. Their only “platform” is to make bank while aiding and abetting MAGA and telling their voters “hey, you have to vote for us. We’re not Trump.”

      2. >The die-hard MAGA cult member who thinks the great Cheeto Pedo can do no wrong? They are a TINY minority in this country.

Nope. The only true desire of the people is revealed at the voting booth, and the voting booth proves you absolutely wrong.

        >by the boneheaded excesses of the Democratic Party over the past 40 years

Sure. Nothing speaks of privilege more than this attitude. Wedge cultural issues matter more to people who have nothing to lose irrespective of who rules.

        >Trump should be the easiest horse in the race to beat, but the Dems can’t even seem to get out of the gate.

Again this sort of naive thinking – the party is to blame, but not the people – is to forget who is the party. It is a surefire way to avoid responsibility. To quote an pithy opinion about the Church sex abuse scandal – a holy people produce holy priests

The people who support the party is the party. They are responsible for who they chose.

The German people were responsible for Hitler. Not the Nazi “party” or the fecklessness of Nazi opponents. The people made a choice to support Hitler. The German Catholics made a choice for Hitler (because ..communists!!!!) Why should they care what atrocities happened to the Jews or other countries? It did not matter to them, because they were not Jews.

I would add to what is in the original post –> the smallest traces of bacteria-filled bullshit like, “I just didn’t know what kind of man he was and can’t be blamed for being fooled.” AND “and blaming it on feckless democrats and other people”

Democracy ensures that country get the government they deserve, and that is the truth here today. A huge number of “Americans” decided that atrocities that happen to “those people” did not matter.

  4. It’s encouraging to see more people
peal away from the noxious MAGA coalition no matter what their persuasion. I don’t care if they’re neo-Nazis, the important point is attacking the strength that comes from their numbers. It’s important to exploit the fact that MAGA isn’t a cult in the true sense. For example, nearly all of the opposition to Warped Speed resides within MAGA after October 2020. Drive a wedge there. https://youtu.be/SNqxUWaSJzk
Appeal to the Wall St capitalists by reminding them who’s imposing the tariffs. With these minorities that Trump has picked up (actually much smaller percentages than he claims) point out that he’s ginning up hate through his campaign against DEI

  5. In 1945, Germany was in ruins and millions of Germans were dead. Yet, many Germans still supported the Nazis. Why? I think this was due to the huge investment by some people in an intellectually and morally bankrupt ideology. They could not admit that they had been so very wrong.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s father was a Nazi. Arnold speaks eloquently of his father and other “broken men” who supported the Nazis and brought death and destruction to their nation. Deep down, they knew that they were wrong, but they could not admit it.

MAGA is morally and intellectually bankrupt, but try to get one of them to admit it. If you engage them seriously, they blather that the Democrats are worse with their “woke.” Deep down, they know that they are wrong, but to admit that they have been bamboozled by a obvious con artist is too painful.

  6. Forty years ago, Marty McFly squared up against Biff Tannen and everyone was like, yeah, Biff Tannen, a creep and a bully, he’s modelled on that Donald Trump guy, you know? Whew, wouldn’t want someone like that as your boss, eh.
But then Trump offered himself as the Ring of Power in human form – the un-cancellable, un-shameable weapon to smite everyone who has failed to accord you respect as you deserve – so a lot of these people decided he ain’t so bad, or indeed had been anointed as Davidic/ Constantinian champion by [God/ The Holy Virgin of Guadalupe].
“I just didn’t realise” might be admissible as an excuse after 2029 if the person can show receipts proving that they paid good money for Trump Water, Trump Steaks, and a diploma from Trump University before 2016. Not from anyone else.
