MAGA loves to mock the less fortunate. This is cruel and childish, but this is MAGA. Curiously, many of these MAGA people who mock the less fortunate, consider themselves to be “good Christians.” They might be in for a rude awakening.
Because, I would argue, with few exceptions, what most people speak of as “Christianity” has been well and thoroughly captured by the culture. It is our ongoing mistake to bemoan the actions and attitudes of Christians when very little in their lives speaks to any encounter with a Living God, a Christ who saturates and permeates all of creation and who bends down – and bends up – toward each individual with tenderness. And it’s not at all their fault that they haven’t had this encounter – they were rarely or never given the opportunity or even the framework for it. When Christianity is nothing more than a behavioral checklist to affirm in-group status, then we should not be at all surprised when Christians – so-called or otherwise – behave in antithetical ways.
