The MAGA antichrist Cult–and the actual Church–summed up in three tweet exchanges.

The only thing worse than the arrogant prickery of the Cult that always assumes that they and they alone are the sum total of the Real Church on Earth is the easy capitulation of those in the Resistance who immediately agree with them and also reduce the Church to nobody and nothing but its worst MAGA members.
Stop ceding the field to the biggest assholes in the Church. Yes, there are assholes in the Church. Jesus told us from the get-go that the Church will be a field with wheat and weeds, a net full of good fish and bad. But to simply reduce the Church to nothing but its worst members is simply to abandon the fight. It is also to calumny and refuse aid and comfort to the millions–indeed billions of Christians around the world who do not fit into the tiny, racist, antichrist sect that currently dominates the power structure of the US. Indeed, it is to slander and calumny them.
There are countless Domalewskis and TaglesTopGuys (and Pope Leos) out there. 12,000 of them are on my Facebook friends and followers list. More of them are here, reading this blog. Stop telling them they don’t exist or are all alone and that there is only MAGA in the Church. It’s not just a lie, it is a lie that hurts decent people and crushes their hope when there is still great hope. This is a hard struggle. Don’t make it harder by telling those who struggle that they are on their own or, worse, that they are secretly part of the vile antichrist cult they have resisted at great cost for the past 10 years. We are not on our own. God remains Emmanuel and there are still plenty of disciples of Jesus out there.

Maybe it’s because of my locale (northern New England) and the fact that so many priests in our local dioceses are from Africa and South Asia, but I’m not sure I know or have ever actually met any MAGA Catholics. I know they are very loud on the Internet. But in reality? Most MAGA folks I know are of the whack-a-doo evangelical churches or worship primarily beer, guns, and football. Like Everett McGill, they remain unaffiliated. They may say they are sympathetic to Christianity, but they aren’t active church goers and only know John 3:16 from the NFL.
It may be different in other parts of the US.
A majority of U.S. Catholics voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 election, aligning with his administration’s stances on conservative issues like judicial appointments, religious liberty, and opposition to abortion. However, recent polling shows his support among this demographic is experiencing a dip.
Voting Trends and Demographics
2024 Election: Exit polls indicated that nearly \(60\%\) of Catholic voters supported Trump, marking a shift from the 2020 election where they favored Joe Biden.
2026 Polling: Recent data indicates a decline in this support, with some polls showing Catholic approval for Trump dipping below \(50\%\), driven partly by administration actions and recent geopolitical policies.
That means a majority of Catholics in this country at this time are not people of good will. I think even in 2016 any reasonably astute person had the capacity to know what Donald Trump was really about, but for charity’s sake it’s possible to craft an excuse for people who genuinely believed they were getting something different or that he would somehow rise to the dignity of the office.
But there was no defensible good faith reason in 2024. The Catholics and others who voted for him that time were not overlooking his evil in service of some perceived greater good. They were voting for the evil, knowingly and usually gleefully. The were voting for cruelty and sadism. For racism. For fascism. This cannot be glossed over or whitewashed in the service of the notion of “Not All Catholics/Christians”.
I’ve seen no credible evidence at all that any significant amount of MAGA voters, Catholic or otherwise have reconsidered their support for Trump. Many of course regret that the harm they intended mostly for brown people also rebounded on them, but that’s not real contrition.
I’ll believe they’ve had a change of heart when and only when I see their voting patterns change.
So while it remains technically true that not nearly all Catholics are MAGA, a solid majority are and remain so.
Its very different in the South, very.
It’s quite annoying how MAGA Catholics think that they, and only they, are “good Catholics.” They side with Trump over the Pope. If you have doubts about Trump, they imply that you are bound for Hell.
You have to wonder when will the fever break? When will they come to their senses? Perhaps never.
The Church in this country – not unlike the Constantinian “bargain” of 1700 years ago – long ago decided in its desperate grasping to aspire to be “real Americans” to become chaplain to Empire rather than prophets of justice. Yes, of course, there are exceptions and the fact that we can name most of them between us tells you how fully captured the church became and in many ways still is. I have a lovely and pastoral man as our parish priest, but he is very much a creature of not rocking the boat. Same with most pastors I know. The Church has been told to sit in its place while the engine of consumer capitalism and militarism does its work, and by and large we have complied. The greatest gift of the Adderall Autocrat is to pull back the veil over this relationship and reveal for many to see the bedfellows that church and power have become. That’s one good way – if we have some faith that the Holy Spirit has a plan – to nudge the community of believers a bit more toward the Beloved Community.
Who was the “lesbian agitator” referenced by Matt Walsh?
I believe Nicole Good. It appears essential to add in a label like Walsh did, to help establish sub-human status (“she’s a public sinner, obviously not worthy of life”, etc.)
