Your regular reminder that grace is grace, not magic

“Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” (Ac 1:6–8)

In times of high stress, we often get mad at God for not doing a magic act and making all the problems go away. Y’know. Like now. But as Augustine said, “God created us without us, but he does not will to save us without us.” So salvation from our troubles comes as fast as we–as a species–let it happen. And we are extraordinarily slow to learn and slow to change. You wanted freedom of choice? You got it. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Now deal with the consequences of that.
