There is nothing the Party of Personal Responsibility loves to more than dodge responsibility. As we noted in this space yesterday, ex-MAGA contrition is nearly always deeply imperfect contrition. Case in point:
This, being translated, means, “I remain as vengeful and stupid as I always was, but I don’t want to take responsibility for it. So instead of admitting that Biden did a pretty good job, I will lie that he forced me to vote for a visible-from-space con man for the second time when I had already witnessed his criminality incompetence and treason, claim the con man ‘let me down’ and then claim ‘the system’–not my culpable, stupid, and spiteful choice–is why I am where I am now.”
Don’t get me wrong. It’s a sort of contrition and is about the best you can expect for a cult that reflexively scapegoats and shifts blame and has trained itself to do so for decades. But it’s nothing like full contrition and nowhere near a firm purpose of amendment. Compared to a healthy, normal person it is barely registers as repentance on the Richter Scale at all. But compared the the orange messiah this guy is rejecting–who is chronically incapable of ever admitting he has been wrong about anything in his entire life–it is at least a start.
The impressive thing is that God will honor even this half-assed stuff from us and encourage us to keep going and do better. We should too. But that by no means we have to pretend that this stuff is anywhere near satisfactory and nor does it mean we should not confront people who do this on their baloney.
